Graphic design in China began in the 20th century with typography rooted in ancient writing systems. Chinese script began as pictograms, which trace back to the Shang dynasty. Studying the development of the Chinese script provides insight into how the traditional forms influenced the evolution of modern Chinese typography. This study allows us to under- stand which characteristics are preserved, adapted, and in use today.
